Hospitals

Not surprisingly, most large-scale medical facilities are able to handle a broad spectrum of handicapped conditions.  They typically have the equipment, personnel, and training to accommodate a wide range of needs.  But not all medical tourism vacations involve “traditional hospitals.”  What if you want to go abroad for dental tourism, plastic surgery at a clinic, Ayurvedic healing, massage therapy or any number of other treatments that are commonly available at smaller facilities

You can’t always assume that a fully licensed clinic or medical facility will be able to handle all of your needs.  So again, just as you call/write ahead with hotels and airports, you should also call and write ahead to any medical facilities you plan to visit on your health vacation

The exact types of questions you should ask will ultimately depend on your disability.  Some of the more popular questions include:

  • Does the facility make allowances for dietary restrictions, medication requirements, and equipment needs?
  • Are the personnel and staff members properly trained to address your particular disability?
  • Is the facility handicapped accessible?
  • Can the facility provide medical evacuations in the event of an emergency?
  • Does the facility provide guides, translators, and medical equipment as necessary?
  • Does the facility have the necessary technology to handle medical emergencies?  And if not, does the facility have working relationships with nearby hospitals that do have the appropriate technology?
If you fail to receive satisfactory answers to any of the above, you might consider altering your itinerary accordingly.  Perhaps you should investigate other facilities or medical tourism destinations.
