What Is Circumcision Surgery?
Circumcision surgery is a surgical procedure where the surgeon partially or completely removes the foreskin (called a prepuce) of the penis. Often performed for religious or cultural reasons on infants or youths approaching puberty, circumcision surgery is also an option for adult males suffering from medical complications such as paraphimosis. Circumcision surgery also lowers the risk of catching certain STDs. Â
The patient receives general anesthesia for the 30 minute procedure. The surgeon pulls the foreskin forward and trims it. Using dissolving stitches or surgical glue, the surgeon then closes the open edges. The surgeon may also administer local anesthesia to the penis immediately after the surgery to keep the area pain-free for six to eight hours after the general anesthesia has worn off. Patients may return home on the same day. Â
