What Is Varicose Ulcer Treatment?
Swollen varicose veins can develop ulcers that become extremely painful, particularly if they become infected. Varicose ulcer treatment involves putting constant pressure on the veins to help the ulcer to heal. Â
Prior to applying this pressure, patient is often restricted to the bed and must keep his or her legs elevated to reduce swelling. The patient is typically given antibiotics to control the skin inflammation around the ulcers. In most cases, no anesthesia is necessary for the main varicose ulcer treatment. Â
During the operation, the doctor measures the ulcer and administers a probe test to check circulation. A sample of the discharge is sent to the laboratory to test for bugs in the ulcers. The results of the test determine the course of future antibiotic treatments. Once this step is complete, the doctor cleans the ulcer and places a non-stick dressing over it. Using four layers of special bandages, the doctor applies pressure to the varicose vein, wrapping the bandages from the knee to the base of the toes. After the varicose ulcer treatment, the patient schedules weekly checkups and takes any antibiotics that have been prescribed. The bandages, which are changed weekly, remain in place until the varicose ulcer has healed completely. This could take up to 16 weeks. Support stockings or injection treatment may still be necessary after recovery. Â
