What Is Vulval Lesion Excision Surgery?

Patients suffering from raw or swollen patches of skin on the vulva usually require vulval lesion excision surgery to determine the cause and provide relief.  During the procedure, a piece of the skin is taken for further examination to determine the appropriate treatment.

After administering general or local anesthesia, the surgeon makes an incision around all or part of the affected area to remove a piece for microscopic examination.  The surgeon then uses dissolving stitches to stitch the wound shut.  Vulval lesion excision surgery usually takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.  Most patients return home on the same day as the operation.

Patients wear a sanitary napkin due to slight vaginal bleeding for the first 3 to 4 days post surgery.  Some tenderness may be apparent for the first week or so.  Patients should take baths with regular soap and water three times daily to keep the area clean and to aid the healing process.  A checkup is necessary approximately six weeks after the vulval lesion excision surgery, by which time the results of the test will also be ready.  Further treatment may be necessary, depending on the findings of the test.  Patients typically resume light work after 1 week and heavy labor within 2 weeks.
