What Is Subphrenic Abscess Surgery?

Subphrenic abscess surgery helps patients suffering from the buildup of pus in the upper abdomen under the chest.  The patient is given general anesthesia before the surgeon makes a 3-inch long incision through the skin into the abscess.  This allows the pus to drain freely from the wound.  With the insertion of a rubber drainage tube, the wound continues to drain until it is completely clear.  Over the course of 1 or 2 weeks, the abscess space reduces in size.  When this reduction becomes apparent through X-rays, the surgeon reduces the length of the drainage tube accordingly until the space closes completely.  The wound then heals usually within 5 to 6 days.  The wound should be kept completely dry while the tube is in place.

The patient may also have a catheter in place in the bladder after subphrenic abscess surgery to aid urination while their mobility is impaired.  Patients can usually leave their beds the day after the operation, but they may experience some discomfort.  The patient must return for a checkup 1 month after subphrenic surgery.  They will likely need to rest a lot during this period.  Patients typically regain full strength 1 to 2 months post surgery.  Driving or sexual relations should be possible after 3 weeks.
