Anal Fistula Removal

What Is Anal Fistula Surgery?

Anal fistula surgery is a procedure that helps remove any number abnormal connections between the anus and the skin.  These connections (known as fistulas) usually occur as a result of abscesses that have drained but not healed.  Prior to anal fistula surgery, patients should consume a high fiber diet with 6 to 10 glasses of water per day to soften the fecal matter that passes through the anus.

Patients may receive general, spinal, or local anesthesia for the procedure.  If the patient has a simple fistula, the surgeon cuts it open and places a dissolving suture around the edge.  The fistula then heals by itself and flattens out as a scar.  Complex fistulas are harder to treat with anal fistula surgery since they are deeper inside the skin than simple fistulas.  In such instances, other treatments may be necessary, which could span over the course of weeks, months, or years.

Patients may receive oral painkillers after the anal fistula surgery and may take sitz baths as often as necessary to relieve any discomfort.  Patients are typically mobile within an hour or two of surgery and can often return home on the same day.  Bowel movements should recommence within 1 to 3 days, and patients may experience some initial discomfort.  Controlling flatulence may be difficult for the first few weeks.  Once they return home, most patients can resume normal activities without too many hindrances.  If the pain persists for several days, one should contact his or her physician immediately.
