What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers (also known as porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are thin ceramic coverings used to correct cracked, chipped, discolored, or irregularly shaped teeth.  They cal also be used to fill in gaps.  Usually cosmetic in nature, most dental veneers are not normally covered under traditional dental insurance.

Receiving dental veneers usually requires 2 to 3 visits to the dentist.  The first is the consultation.  The second two visits are to make and apply the veneers, respectively.  Preparation of the dental veneers involves removing some of the outer enamel, taking a mold, and then sending these impressions to a laboratory for customization.

During preparation, a local anesthetic may be used (depending on the sensitivity of the patient).  From consultation to bonding, the process may take almost a month, which includes 1-2 weeks for delivery of your personalized veneers.  There isn’t necessarily a recovery period for dental veneers.  However, dentists will generally request a follow-up within a week from the bonding to ensure the cemented veneer hasn’t shifted or loosened.

Not everyone is a good candidate for dental veneers.  Unhealthy or weakened teeth may result in poor bonding.  Additionally, the enamel removal can heighten sensitivity to heat or cold.  Likewise, people who grind or clench their teeth (bruxism) are at greater risk of chipping or damaging their veneers.
