What Is Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery?
Women who wish to tighten the vagina and restore it to pre-pregnancy state often opt for vaginal rejuvenation surgery (also known as vaginal tightening or cosmetic vaginoplasty). The ultimate goals of the procedure are to enhance the appearance of the vagina and heighten sexual gratification. Â
The entire procedure takes approximately 1 hour to complete; however, an overnight stay may be necessary. The patient typically receives general, spinal, or local anesthesia and sedatives. During vaginal rejuvenation surgery, the surgeon uses either a laser or the traditional scalpel method. Joining the stretched muscle at the back of the vagina, the surgeon shortens the muscle and removes excess skin. This effectively reduces the vaginal lining and tightens the vaginal muscles. Scarring is only apparent from within the vagina. Â
After vaginal rejuvenation surgery, the patient will experience some swelling and discomfort. Most patients can walk freely a few days post surgery and resume work within 1 week. Patients should avoid sexual intercourse for 4 to 6 weeks after the surgery. Checkups are often necessary to ensure normal recovery. Full recovery typically occurs approximately 2 to 3 weeks post surgery. Risks include urine retention, due to an overtightening of the region.
