Shortening of Teeth 11 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
Is it possible to shorten the teeth. For generations our family has this very peculiar trait(?!!). Almost all of us have very long incisors. I feel that my face is too small for the long teeth. Is it possible for me get is shortened with affecting the functionality of the teeth?

You can get them filed down to a smaller size. If necessary, you can also remove them and have permanent implants fitted, that look and are as functional as the original teeth. Filing them does not affect the functionality, but there is a limit to how much you can shorten them.

I had a similar problem and the teeth looked longer coz od a recession iof my gums. I had a hell of a time as I coukld not drink anything hot or cold. I had a gumm grafting done and I am ver happy with the results. So do check out this option too

Gum grafting can be a cosmetic fix, and it could improve your looks, if that is what you are looking for. However, if some of your teeth are longer, and have an irregular bite, you have no option but to file it down or replacing it with an implant.

While for cosmetic reasons shortening of teeth indeed is a good option - I have heard of cases where such procedures put some strain on the gums. It could also lead to infection because the natural enamel that covers the teeth has been sawed off. A better option would be to cap the teeth.

A good orthodontist would be able to guide you as to whether there would be any long term ill effects when you go in for teeth shortening. I really don't think it should be a problem considering the fact that there are many people who do under go this procedure for cosmetic purposes. A professional would surely be able to allay your fears in this regard.
