A friend is very sick, and he has been diagnosed as having liver abscess. He is on antibiotics, and is in intensive care. Could someone give more information on this condition and how dangerous is this? Is it easy to cure?

It is indeed sad that your fried has liver abscess. The treatment for this is an invasive procedure that is either surgical or through the skin with the aid of a needle to drain the abscess. Prolonged antibiotic therapy is a must for this. There are times when antibiotics by itself can cure the infection. It depends on how severe the damage is. Unfortunately (this is not to dishearten you - I am merely stating a fact) the death rate for liver abscess is 10-30% even among treated patients and it is higher with people who suffer from multiple abscesses. There is also a likelihood that your friend develops sepsis which could be life threatening. So please do ensure that this friend gets immediate and the best possible treatment.

Hey thanks for the information. I have been searching for more information, and came across a small article in a magazine that a new treatment is being developed or tested that can actually regenerate liver cells. Are any details availabe about this? Can it help in this case?

Nova dear The liver is one organ which has an inherent regenaration capacity and come to normal size AFTER hepatectomy. The abcess treatment is diffrent. Its curable thouigh in ,most cases. Take care

Hi Rilloweena - the info you gave is interesting. Since the liver can regenerate, is there a cure for liver cirhosis? Can the liver be regenerated if a part of the liver is still intact?
