I have been asked to take iron supplements to improve my haemoglobin levels. One restriction is not to take dairy products when taking iron supplements. Why is that? Since I am taking the iron supplements twice a day, I really miss the dairy products. I love milk and yoghurt.

Dairy products are not a definite no no when it comes to taking iron supplements. Only ensure that you take these iron supplements a good three hours before and after you take in dairy products. Dairy products are known to impair the digestion of iron.

So is it only for oral iron supplements? What if I take injections? Would I still have to hold off on dairy products?

Another helpful hint is that Iron is absorbed better in the body when taken with vitamin C. So take your iron pill with your multivitamin.

and as the previous post has said, Iron absorption is blocked by calcium. itis thereforte advisable to take calcium tablets at least several hours after iron or multivitamin pills

There is no restriction or time constraint on consuming dairy products if you supplementing your iron through injections.
