Whenever my brother and I go for jogging, my brother is getting pain in his knee and right calf. He is 17 years old and only he feels this pain during jogging or walking long distances. Does anyone advice the precautions or treatment to be taken for this pain?

May be he had a ligament tear or pull. This can sometimes result in the pain in the knee and calf muscle pain. I suggest he takes it easy for a week or so and do enough warm up before he runs. May he has started jogging too far too early. It is advisable to gradually increase pace and distance. Ask him to try this out. If it persists he should consult a bone specialist and have the recommended tests done.

Hi Yellowtail, knee pain can result from over use, inadequate streching before exercise, not warming up or cooling down, or even obesity. The knee depends on bones, ligaments, tendons and cartilage to function properly. One of them is the bone in the calf area called tibia, and it has four ligaments and two tendons connected to the tibia. This is the reason the pain is felt in the calf area too.
The best you can do at home is to rest, treat the knee with ice, use a knee brace and elevate the knee while reclining or resting. I suggest that your brother should see a doctor, just in case it is the start of something serious.

Of course, I suggested the same thing like using a knee brace while jogging. But he is not happy with it. He wants to undergo treatment in India since he is going to his friend's place in Mumbai. So can anyone suggest him a good hospital in Mumbai to proceed his treatment?
