Hernia 1 Year, 5 Months ago Karma: 0  
Hi there,
My friend had surgery for hernia in the lower abdomen about five years ago. Now he is in pain again, and the doctor has advised him to go in for surgery again. Is it common for the hernia to come again in the same spot? Or, is it due to inadequate procedure during the earlier surgery?

hernias are of different types. I donpot know what type your friend is suffering from. Incisional hernias many a time are recurrent especially in heavy weight people. The technique is also very important. Do consult a good hernia specialist for advice

Thanks for the input. It is ofcourse incisional hernia now, since it is a failure of the previous repair. My friend has already contacted a doctor, and is going in for surgery soon. Any input from someone who has gone through this procedure is welcome.

Hi Illias,

I have been through a repair, and if done correctly it should not fail. Now reinforcement is also used, so that the opening has some support after it heals. With reinforcement, there is chances of a failure are reduced. However, having had hernia surgery, it would be wiser to take it easy on strenuous activities, especially those that put pressure on the affected part.

Any idea why Hernia is caused – I don’t understand medical terms used by my doctor – so I want to know down to earth reason for hernia and its effects on the persons health – my wife is having hernia in the stomach region ……..she has been advised surgery and we have been delaying it ……..

It could be caused by a weakening of the muscles of the abdomen. Do not delay the treatment, it can become quite serious. There are minimally invasive surgical procedures available now, and reinforcemnt mesh is used to strengthen the area to avoid a recurrence.

Surgery often helps - but in about 25% of the patients there is a relapse of hernia. And the only reason for this is that they don't take preventive action or at least don't follow the advice of the doctors on preventing the recurrence. One should be very careful - not lift weights, not do physical exercises, maintain the correct Body Mass Index etc..
