Currently, I live in Texas and am covered by health insurance. However, I have received medical care in the past 5 years that would render myself "uninsurable" in the individual insurance market should I lose my job in the future. Specifically, I am overweight, have taken antidepressants (both generic and brand-name), received counseling, and am currently on medication for hypertension. I am no longer taking an antidepressant, but may need to start it again if my depression were to return in the future.
I am considering receiving treatment for my health issues overseas in order to "clean up" my medical records in the US, so that I would be eligible for individual insurance in 5 years, and would be able to test normally for BP, cholesterol, etc. at that time.
Having just returned from a trip to the west coast of Mexico, I am considering a medical tourism trip to Mexico to check for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), to obtain a supply of medications (fluoxetine for depression and lisopranil for hypertension), and enjoy the beach while I'm at it. My questions are:
- Are there any reputable clinics in Los Cabos, Mazatlan, or Puerto Vallarta that would be able to help me?
- If I am diagnosed with OSA, would I be able to purchase a CPAP/APAP machine in Mexico and take it back to the US? I believe electricity is 110VAC in both Mexico and the US.
- Is a prescription required in Mexico for Prozac (fluoxetine) or for lisonpranil? If so, would the clinic be able to obtain the prescription for me?
- Does Mexican Customs (Aduana) have any restrictions on how many medications/doses can be taken out of Mexico?
- Does US Customs have any restrictions on how many medications/doses can be brought back to the US? Would I be able to bring back a 180-day (6 month) supply of 2 medications?
- Do Mexican doctors report to MIB (an insurance industry database of persons' medical conditions)?
- Do Mexican pharmacies report to Intelliscripts (an insurance industry database of persons' prescriptions)?
Thanks,
JD
