Hi, the first image that comes to mind when thinking of an old person is falling teeth. However, there are old people with good teeth even at the age of 70. What causes deterioration of teeth as we age? Can it not be stopped ?

There is not much coordinated research on the subject. Some say it is the diet,- but no convincing proof - others say it is genetic. The latter is more probable, since the instances of good teeth in old age 70s and 80s are rare. Any further information would be welcome, this is an interesting subject.

A good set of 32 is hereditary first. Good teeth runs in the family. Other things that help are good dental hygiene, diet and water. Smoking ruins the teeth just as chocolate does. Another very important factor is water and one must consider the composition of the water here. In some areas water is treated and in some areas the extent of flourine content in the water could ruin the teeth. Old age in any case loosen the gums and hence affect the teeth. So a steady dosage of Vitamin C from a young age is also important here.

Vitamin C and adequate Calcium and Magnesium in your diet - the key to healthy teeth and gums.
Take plenty of fruits - especially of the citrus variety. Milk or milk products.
And then of course Dental Hygiene.
Do all this - you can live up to 100 and yet have a healthy set of teeth.

I dont think so cats thats true. I have never heard old man and woman getting new teeth after they attain age of 90.
Most of the old man and woman use artifical teeth to continue with life.
It is scary to loose teeth at old age. But then it is part of life.

Here is some information that may be of some surprise to you people. My dad has been wearing dentures from when he was 49 years old! But at 70 he suddenly started growing a pre molar much to the surprise and amusement of everybody. We had to have that tooth extracted. So there may be some truth in what 'cats' says!
