Hi, there are many suggestions we get for well being, and some swear by salads or fruits for dinner and nothing else. Is that wise? Do we need need only this or carbs and proteins as well? What would be a good combination of foods for dinner?

It really depends on your lifestyle. There are many household where the evening meal is the only family meal and perhaps the only meal that is cooked at home. Breakfast is usually a rush affair - where many simply do with orange juice or coffee or may be some porridge - sometimes even a sandwich eaten in the car on the way to their office. Lunch is often had in the office(or school - in the case of children) premises - again it could be something light like a sandwich and coffee. In such cases, if the only regular meal one has is during evenings (this is what I presume you mean by dinner), then it should be wholesome. But it should be taken a good 3 to 4 hrs before bed time. If on the other hand a day meal is wholesome, you should restrict your dinner to soups and salads or even fruits.

Without considering the extremes like people who do not have time to eat or those who eat too much, if we have an adequate breakfast and lunch, is it not necessary to have carbs and proteins for dinner? When we talk of only soups and/or salads for dinner, I assume it is for people who want to reduce or maintain a certain weight - or am I mistaken?

Yes a light dinner is for those people who want to maintain/reduce their weight. A growing child, an adolescent or a person who does quite a bit of physical labor should not worry about a light meal at night as they would want enough carbs to provide them sustainable energy. The light meal should be light enough to be comfortable, in the sense if the person continues to feel hungry after a light evening meal, it may lead to a hunger head ache and/or sleepless nights. In such a case a fiber rich dish like wheat bread or oatmeal could be added/substituted for fruits and salads.
