Overview

One look at the freely flowing alcohol and scantily clad women in the bars, and you wouldn’t believe you were in the middle of the most orthodox region in the Middle East.  Dubai has struggled to bridge its Islamic culture with the demands of a thriving tourism industry, and it seems to have found a balance that works for all, disgruntled locals included.  Apart from a few exceptions, only clubs and bars inside hotels are allowed to serve alcohol, so you know exactly where to head for a drink.  Serving alcohol is forbidden during daytime in Ramadan, and although the rules specify that alcoholic beverages can be served only to non-Moslems, you'll find more than a few Arabs bending the rules on your medical tourism vacation.

Bars and Clubs

Besides your medical tourism hotels, you will find a good and varied selection of pubs, bars, cafes, and dance clubs at the entertainment complexes.  A prime example is the new Medina Jumeirah mini-city that covers 40 hectares of landscaped Arabian-style beauty.  Inside the mammoth complex is a choice of more than 45 cafes and restaurants, two boutique hotels, a number of lounge, numerous clubs, a kilometer of beachfront, acres upon acres of exclusive shopping, and an amphitheater.  There are other such entertainment complexes that allow you to enjoy several different portions of the city's shopping, dining, and nightlife scene, without having to worry about looking for parking space all over again.

Shisha Bars

This is traditional Arab entertainment, and many of the shisha bars tend to be patronized by locals more than foreigners.  Expect good Arabian-style food, tea, liquor (sometimes), and a communal shisha, a traditional water pipe through which you can smoke flavored tobacco.

Performing Arts

The city hasn't yet begun to promote its performing arts scene, although you will find sporadic performances by local and international artists on your medical tourism trip.  There are plans to establish a theater scene, and the construction of a massive 1500-seater performing arts center, which is expected upon completion to be the largest in the region, is a step in the right direction.
