Getting Around In Phuket Is Easy and Cheap

You can reach just about any place on Phuket Island in less than an hour.  The main roads on Phuket are in good condition, and there are well marked signboards in both Thai and English. The number of roads is limited because of the mountains, so at times you may have to take a round trip to reach your destination

Ride Around

The most common mode of transportation on the island is cruising around on a rented motorbike.  But you must remember to wear a helmet. Also remember that there is no insurance for rental motorbikes. If you want fast and cheap taxi service, simply stop the motorcyclists dressed in green or maroon vests and ask for the fare to your destination.  There is a daytime public transport bus service called the Songthaew (two rows of parallel wooden benches in a colorful wooden body) running on a loop route all over the island. You will also find plenty of taxis or tuk-tuks in Phuket Town that make round trips to northern or southern parts of the island. Remember to negotiate the fare with tuk-tuk drivers beforehand.  Cars and jeeps are available for rent at various locations on the island. Daily rental rates are fixed for unlimited mileage but you have to pay for fuel. Car rental companies provide service at most major hotels.  A word of caution - you are liable for all damages to the vehicle.  So make sure you car has third party insurance coverage against accidents.

Travel In Sea & Air

Long tail boats are available for a full-day hire.  These boats are not as fast as modern speedboats but they are great for short sightseeing trips. A helicopter tour is a fun and enjoyable way to get a bird’s eye view of the island.
