Shopping in Thailand

An unprecedented economic boom has allowed Thailand to become one of Southeast Asia’s biggest shopping destinations.  Myriad shopping opportunities abound, and there is a wealth of traditional handicrafts, textiles, jewelry, and antiques awaiting the serious shopper with deep and not-so-deep pockets.  The distinctive Thai silks that the country is renowned for are to be found at all major arcades and department stores.  If you’re in the mood to splurge, Thailand also boasts of fine jewelry inlaid with rubies, sapphires, jade, and opal all mined from the country’s gemstone-rich quarries. 

Handicrafts and Antiques

Unusual shadow play puppets with moving parts make quirky gifts and are a perfect choice for those who want to return home without the customary Buddha souvenirs.  Furniture, handbags, and mats woven from bamboo are another staple of every shopping bag.  Thailand’s traditional wood carvings of elephants have evolved into more glamorous forms featuring mythical angels, animals, and ornamental dancing figurines.  A firmly-ingrained Chinese tradition of pottery making ensures that you can choose from a varied range of hand painted and richly decorated ceramics.  Lacquered boxes, trays, and dolls abound on the streets of Chiang Mai while silver beaten cigarette cases and vases showcase a centuries’ old craft.

Bargain Shopping

More shopping fun is to be had in the street stalls and bustling markets of Thailand than in the glitzy malls and five-star hotel arcades.  Prepare to use a good fifteen minutes of lung power - haggling is expected and can go on seemingly forever.  Chiang Mai’s Night Bazaar stretches over several blocks and offers just about everything – tapestries, lacquer ware, textiles, silverware, painted umbrellas, handicrafts at throwaway prices, and electronic goods.  Fake designer goods are all over the place.  That ‘Fendi’ bag more likely came from a dingy back alley factory than le studio de Monsieur Karl Lagerfeld!  A visit to a Thai floating market is highly recommended.  These quintessentially Thai shopping areas offer fresh produce and exotic Thai foods in a postcard-pretty setting.
