Nightlife in Bangkok

Bangkok Nightlife for Mature Audiences Only

Bangkok nightlife is exciting, vibrant, and yes, erotic.  If you’re somewhat conservative in your tastes, some aspects of Bangkok’s entertainment industry might alarm you.  This is especially true in areas like Patpong, Nana, and Soi Cowboy-districts known for their go-go shows and sex tourism.  However, even these seedier areas are worth checking out.  Many of the gorgeous women that you see on the streets or stages are actually lady-boys (Katoeys to the locals).  The surgery is so masterful you’ll have to look for the larynx just to be sure.  But make sure you are always respectful and tolerant.  If someone tries to scam you, or drag you inside a Patpong bar, watch your wallet.  Alternatively, call a local beat cop.

Nightlife Activities Range From Tame to Tempestuous

In Bangkok, you can go to a movie, but why would you?  There are hundreds of nightclubs and bars vying for your attention and finances, and they cater to every bent from disco dancers to cowboys to those with alternative lifestyles.  Some are simply a place to relax and have fun (yes, Gen-Xer’s, both are possible).  RCA is a disco district known for its youthful energy, Khao San Road is a backpacker’s paradise, and there are countless restaurants and speakeasies that cater to families, couples, high-end, and budget travelers.  Most nightclubs and bars feature live entertainment, from actual groups like the Drunken Monkeys to karaoke by equally intoxicated primates.  Cover charges are common but not pervasive.  You can play pool or even swim in one. The music is usually generic to the establishment, so if you want Merle Haggard you have to choose a Western bar.  Many bars have Filipino cover bands that sound exactly like J-Lo, the Black Eyed Peas, or Oasis.  Whatever you choose, you will be pleasantly amazed by the Thai attitude of casual tolerance for all but the most bizarre behavior.

The Cost of Food and Drink in Bangkok Nightlife

A beer and a quick meal in Bangkok will typically cost between $3 and $10 depending on where you decide to go.  A bloody Mary will run about $5.  You can buy a sausage roll or fried meat pie in a bar for a couple of bucks or less, and a bottled beer from a local store is usually less than a $1.  Food and beverage are abundant throughout Bangkok, and you can snack on the cheap if you stick with street vendors.  Fresh fruit is usually about thirty cents, and street pad Thai is definitely worth checking out.

After Hours in Bangkok

Last call in Bangkok is officially 1am, but you can easily find late-night spots all over the city.  Clubs in RCA usually close around 2, and hotel bars often stay open all night.  Try hooking up with some locals to find secret hideaways that fly under the radar.
