  • Affordable Infertility Treatments: Available in India

The frustration of being unable to conceive is often compounded by the cost of fertility treatments.  Advances in medical science and technology have only worsened matters since much more technical expertise is required to conduct the procedures and tests.  While childbirth is indeed priceless, few can afford the exorbitant costs associated with fertility treatments in many parts of the world.

Known today as a tropical island paradise and thriving medical tourism center, Phuket was originally inhabited by members of an indigenous tribe known as the Sapang. These pygmy hunters, who also lived in the jungles of Malaysia, found the thick canopy of Phuket’s rainforest to be a perfect shelter shielding them from the eyes of the world.  They lived rather peacefully until the mid nineteenth century when they were displaced by tin miners.  The discovery of tin, can be traced to the merchant ships that frequently stopped off here on their way back and from India and Arabia.  These ships would dock on the island for several months at a time waiting for the weather to clear, and it was probably during these times that they discovered the valuable commodity.

The coastal areas of Phuket, on the other hand, were inhabited by sea gypsies called Chaos Nam who existed on piracy. Many of these Chao Nam villages still exist in Phuket.

Modern History

In 1785, Phuket’s relatively peaceful existence was shattered when the Burmese attacked the region.  As the siege gathered momentum and threatened to destroy Phuket, two brave women, Lady Muk and Lady Chan helped lead the charge to vanquish the Burmese.  A statue honoring these two daughters of the island still stands in Phuket City.

As the tin mining industry boomed, the UK began eyeing Phuket more closely.  They had already secured a few choice spots in the region and were preparing the secure several others.  At the last minute however, they chose Penang.  Phuket meanwhile continued to expand and prosper, and construction in the island took off.  You can still see many of these Sino-Portuguese style buildings during on your medical tourism holiday.  What you won’t see much of, however, is the abundant rainforest that once covered the island.  That changed when the rubber boom took off starting around 1900.  Large parts of Phuket were razed to make space for rubber plantations.

Growth of Medical Tourism

The seventies saw a new type of holidayer searching the world for peace and nirvana.  Invariably, a number of these new Age travelers, hippies, and backpackers made their way to Phuket, drawn by the all-year-round sunny weather and the beautiful beaches.  Since then, the island has begun to welcome another type of “peace seeker.”  Medical tourists arrive by the millions every year to take advantage of the islands unparalleled collection of spas, cosmetic surgery clinics, resorts, and wellness centers.  Phuket has little difficulty making such a sell given the natural beauty and relative calm for which the island is known.  It serves as the perfect getaway for patients who want to recover in tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok.
