Thailand is a tourist haven with a variety of options for visitors.  Although many travelers choose to relax at beaches, trek through mountains, follow wildlife trails, or visit temples, there are a number of sites of historical importance scattered throughout the Kingdom that are definitely worth a visit.

Historical Sites of Thailand

An ancient country, Thailand has a rich and colorful past.  The remnants of this glorious past can be seen across the country in some well preserved ruins.  Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya (also known as Ayutthaya) ranks among Thailand’s oldest and historic sites.  The ancient city of Ayutthaya, Siam’s capital for 417 years between 1350 and 1767, is about 76 km away from Bangkok.  You can catch a bus or a train from Bangkok, but there are also regular river cruises from Bangkok to Ayutthaya every day.  While at Ayutthaya, do not miss "Phra Mongkhon Bophit," a large Buddha image, Chao Sam Phraya National Museum, and the ruins of the former royal palace.  To get to know Ayutthaya better, hire a bicycle or hop onto a tuk-tuk.  It’s the most affordable means of transport. Try and visit the Chao Phrom Market to pick up a few local artifacts.

Other Historical Sites

Another historically important destination is the archaeological site at Ban Prasat which is located about 45 km away from Nakhon Ratchasima on the Nakhon Ratchasima-Phimai route.  Many archeological discoveries have been made here, some of which are almost 300 years old.  The historical site of Prasat Nang Ram, which has been built in the Khmer style of architecture, used to be a nursing home of sorts in the 12th century.  Phimai Historical Park is situated along Thailand’s northern plains and consists of temples and palaces dating back over a thousand years.  The most spectacular structure in the whole region is at Phimai, about 60 km northeast of Nakhon Ratchasima.  Prasat Hin Phimai is the largest sandstone sanctuary in Thailand and is situated at the center of Phimai Ancient City.  All these ancient sites stand as witnesses to a glorious past, an ovation to the triumphant history of a proud nation.
