Monument of the Two Heroines

Located on the Airport Road is the Monument of the Two Heroines, erected to commemorate two Thai women, Khunying Mook and her sister Khunying Chan.  During a battle with the Burmese army 200 years ago, both these brave women led an all female army – dressed as men – and took on the invading forces.  This motley group was successful in repelling the Burmese while their men folk were busy waging other wars on the mainland.  They enjoy an exalted status throughout Thailand, and the monument is always decorated with offerings of flowers and joss sticks.  Their spirits still guard the island, or so the legend goes.

Old Phuket and Chinatown

In the mid 19th century, the rise in tin mining in this region brought in hordes of Chinese to Phuket.  Their legacy can still be seen in much of the architecture and streets in Phuket.  A walk along Krabi-Thalang Road and Dibuk reveals these unique influences, in the mansions with their intricate latticework, and famously colorful ceramic tiles.  Old Phuket also has a number of houses built in the traditional Sino-Portuguese style.  Although most of these heritage homes are privately owned, guided tours are available for some of them.

Thalang National Museum

Thalang National Museum is located on Pa Khlok Road, to the east of the Monument of the Two Heroines.  This museum offers a peek into Phuket’s rich history and includes handicrafts and other objects from the historical battle of Thalang, during which the two heroines and their all woman army defeated the Burmese army in the 18th century.  There is also a gallery exhibiting interesting artifacts relating to daily Phuket life and the colorful culture of the Sea Gypsies or Moken.  The museum is open from 8:30am to 4:00pm every day except holidays.
