Food and Water

Is Thai water drinkable?

Food in Thailand is relatively safe, even if you eat at street vendors.  Unlike many other developing countries, it's safe to eat uncooked fruits or vegetables after they have been washed.  At the time of this writing, chicken was still safe to eat, but you'll want to check the WHO's most current recommendations concerning H5N1 (avian flu) prior to your departure.  To view our discussion about avian flu, click here.

It's not safe to drink tap water in Thailand, although it's perfectly acceptable to brush your teeth, wash your dishes, or cook food with it.  Fortunately, bottled water is sold almost everywhere you go.  Thailand offers an impressive selection of bottled water ranging from local brands to popular ones that you probably see back home (example: Evian).

Thailand Is Hotter Than You Think, So Drink Up

Thailand has three distinct seasons, hot, rainy, and hotter (we're not joking).  As you walk around to check out the various tourist destinations, make sure you consume plenty of water.  During the hottest months (usually from March to May), the temperature easily reaches up to 100° (38° C).  It's a good idea to drink more water than you think you should.
