Avian Flu ConcernsÂ
Avian flu (also known as H5N1) is still a serious problem throughout the world. Intermittent outbreaks crop up from time to time in countries ranging from Cambodia to the United States. Obviously, it is a situation that the Thai government takes very seriously. Nationwide efforts to eradicate avian flu have been moderately successful over the past several months, but to date, it still exists in certain areas of the country.Â
What Precautions Should You Take?
Realistically, there is only so much that you can do to limit your exposure. Obviously, don't handle wild birds, animals that exhibit suspicious symptoms, or raw meat. At the time of this writing, chicken and duck were still safe to eat, but make sure they are properly cooked over high heat.Â
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) frequently update their travel advisories and disease alerts. Make sure you carefully review any new warnings posted on their Web sites before embarking for Thailand. In addition, your home country should have government-sponsored travel advisories and warnings. Below are some useful resources worth looking over before starting your medical vacation to Thailand:Â
