As one of the most vibrant cities on the continent, Johannesburg is where the rest of Africa comes to shop.  As such there are myriad opportunities to drop your cash at the city’s more than 20 malls, numerous bazaars, and markets.

Shopping Districts

The malls are fine if you’re looking for products or brands from home, but most of them are designed along cookie cutter lines as totally enclosed spaces.  The best malls by far, are in Rosebank where outdoor seating and eating areas break the monotony of endless glass and granite.  Rosebank also has some of the best boutiques in the city, showcasing designs from the hottest local talent.  The Auckland Park area has a stretch of antique shops that stock everything from brassware and glassware to vintage motorcycles.  The Greenside neighborhood also has an eclectic selection of fashion boutiques, for both men and women.  The Parkhurst area is a great place to stop by for souvenir shopping on your medical tourism trip.  Antique and curio shops, art galleries, craft depots, and book stores – you can spend hours visiting the small shops here.  The Nelson Mandela Square is lined with exclusive boutiques, antique galleries, and cozy cafés where you can take a cappuccino break from your medical tourism shopping.

Markets

Head to the African Crafts Market held on weekdays in Rosebank, featuring art and crafts from all over Africa.  Shops at the Mai Mai bazaar target local Zulus as their primary clientele, which means that you will be able to get your hands on authentic traditional utensils and arts.  Located in Boksburg just outside Johannesburg, the East Rand Flea Market is open everyday except Mondays.  It offers a wide range of African handicrafts, including beadwork, head dresses, drums, ceramics, jewelry, and clothing.  Little Afrikaans and Indian eateries punctuate the crowded spaces, offering shoppers light refreshment.
