Luxury Hotels

Although Johannesburg is slowly emerging as a leisure destination of choice, it still primarily serves as a commercial and business center, and thus, many of the hotels you're come across during your medical tourism sojourn will cater primarily to business travelers (and business travelers' budgets).  These properties are usually located in the safer areas of town and include excellent amenities, like free shuttle services to and from the airport.

Other high-end hotels include a new crop of boutique hotels that have begun to spring up around the city.  Options in boutique hotels can range from uber expensive luxurious facilities to more intimate and easy going accommodations that boast a lot of character. 

Moderate Accommodations

The northern suburbs have a small selection of beautiful, quiet boutique hotels in one of the city’s most peaceful residential neighborhoods.  These hotels can offer a calming end to a long day out in the bustling city on your medical tourism trip.  Some extraordinary accommodations have also come up at the Cradle of Humankind, 45 kilometers outside the city.  This 183 square mile (473 sq km) area contains a series of limestone caves where 2.3 million-year-old fossilized remains have been unearthed.  You’ll be far from the madness of the city, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.  The area is home to over 20 species of mammals, and you should have plenty of opportunity for hiking and other outdoor activities (arranged through your hotel).

Budget Accommodations

The enterprising residents of Joburg have been more than willing to renovate their homes to rent out to foreign visitors, including medical tourism vacationers.  These bed and breakfast facilities offer guests comfortable rooms, home-cooked food, and the chance to sample life as a South African.  Most home-stays, self-catering cottages, and apartments are located in the city center with easy access to all sights and shopping. 

The city also has a vibrant backpacking and independent traveling community, and hostels, mostly located in the city center, have sprung up to cater to these visitors too.
