Dining in Johannesburg

Overview

The Gauteng province, of which Johannesburg is the capital, has a selection of some 2,000 restaurants.  Suffice to say, no matter what your pleasure, you’ll find an eatery that sates your cravings somewhere in this sprawling city.

Global Flavors

Johannesburg's diverse mix of international communities means that virtually every popular cuisine in the world is represented.  For Chinese food, head to the city’s two Chinatown districts in Bruma or Eastgate.  Those seeking Italian cuisine will find a nice selection of fine restaurants in the Orange Grove area.  For a sampling of anything else from an international menu, ask the hotel desk clerk at your medical tourism accommodation, and he or she can make suggestions.

Food Districts

For fine dining in Johannesburg, your best bet is the Melville area, packed with one fine eatery after another.  This neighborhood draws the city’s nouveau riche, especially in the evenings.  If you visit in the daytime however, you might be surprised at the limited occupancy.  Melville is more a nightlife kind of neighborhood, where the well-heeled come to swipe their plastic.  Even so, there is a great selection of Asian fusion and Afrikaans cuisine restaurants here, all in all making for a great night out on your medical tourism holiday

The Greenside area is not as vibrant as Melville, but the food tends to be of a better quality.  There are some innovative Indian–Middle Eastern fusion restaurants, as well as Italian and Mediterranean joints.  The predominantly Jewish neighborhood of Norwood lacks the upper class vibe of Melville but has some great Italian and French Provencal restaurants.  The diners are more mature, and the ambience is less noisy, which in itself, should be enough reason to visit.

For a bite of Thai or a taste of Sushi on your medical tourism holiday, head to Melrose Arch, the go-to place for all things Asian.  There are Malaysian restaurants, Vietnamese joints, and Chinese bistros all on the same block.
