Budget Dining

It’s not surprising that Singapore is such a gourmand’s paradise.  With 4 million residents, 7.5 million tourists (1 million of whom are medical tourism travelers), and tons of outdoor activities (and shopping), you have restaurants and food courts that surface faster than chefs can keep up.  There are more than 2,000 eating establishments in Singapore city alone.

Eating out is relatively cheap in Singapore which is why food courts and hawker centers are always packed with locals and medical tourism visitors alike.  A hawker center is a large open courtyard with countless stalls where you can place your order for Chinese, Indian, Malay, and other delicacies. People watch while the chef sautés and stir-fries up your order for you and a waiter delivers it to your table.

Food courts are commonly found in shopping centers and offer a larger variety of cuisines, including Western for the homesick medical tourism traveler.  Prices at both these types of budget dining options are on the lower side, and hygiene standards are superb.  Plus, they stay open till late with some open 24 hours a day. Singapore’s high standards of cleanliness assure that tap water is drinkable throughout the country.

Restaurants

A fine meal is the preferred way to close a business deal in Singapore, and there’s no shortage of haute cuisine establishments here.  Ethnic Chinese, Malay, and Indian restaurants will give the wide-eyed Western diner his money’s worth in terms of dramatic presentation and exotic eating habits, but choices are not restricted to these.  Some of the best restaurants are tucked away in premium hotels, so your best bet might be to check out the in-house restaurant in your hotel for an introduction to Singapore’s flavorful diversity.  Expect lavish culinary treatments coupled with ambient settings that enhance the experience of luxury dining.  Only in Singapore will you find an in-house restaurant doctor who will diagnose your ailments and prescribe a dish that has enough yin and yang to cure whatever it is that’s bothering you!  A surreal dining experience, and just one of many innovative dining concepts that add a fresh twist to eating out in Singapore.

What You Must Try

Fiery crabs cooked with oodles of powdered chillies and served with rice is the national favorite.  Besides this, the Malay delicacy satay, sweet skewered meat slightly charred at the edges and served with a peanut dip, the limitless smorgasbord of Chinese delicacies including Cantonese dim sum platters, and Singapore style fried rice which is a lighter version of its Chinese cousin come highly recommended.  Indian banana leaf eateries are the perfect place to experience pure vegetarian dining Indian style.
