The sprawling Filipino capital of Manila hasn’t really been a major player on the South East Asian tourist scene. Most travelers prefer to visit Hong Kong for the shopping, Singapore for the family fun, and Bangkok for the nightlife, with the result that Manila is often shortchanged. This ignoring of Manila is ironically what makes it such an attractive destination and an affordable city. Since cash flush visitors don’t frequent the city, the accommodations here won’t burn a hole in your wallet. Lodgings can range from smaller establishments that offer dormitories, small family units, and shared common rooms to ultra luxurious five star hotels. Even the big name chains, most of which have made their presence felt here, offer cheaper rooms than their group hotels elsewhere in the world.

Budget Accommodations

For those looking to spend a few nights in Manila without breaking the bank, the Ermita and Malate neighborhoods are the places to head. In its earlier days, Ermita, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Manila, was a sleazy neighborhood, crawling with go-go bars. A lot has changed since then; the area has been spruced up and cleaned out, and today Emita is lined with budget hotels and equally affordable eateries. The Malate area also has a plethora of cheaper hotels, and as neighborhoods go, this one is far more happening than Ermita is. There’s a flourishing café culture, and hip new bars and restaurants have sprung up at a dizzying pace. Plus, you’ll be just a few minutes from Malate Church, one of Manilas many tourist attractions.

Plush Digs

For truly luxurious living, business travelers and tourists alike prefer the posh Makati district. This is the most prestigious address in town and the commercial and business center of Manila. Most international hotel chains are located here, as are countless shopping venues. If you’re in the mood to splurge, you’ll find the upscale shopping galleries, chic restaurants, and trendy bars within these hotels, exclusive and time saving. Makati isn’t exactly a historic or cultural hotspot, but there’s a great selection of fine restaurants, miles upon miles of shopping spaces, a thumping nightlife, and the largest and most spectacular malls in the Philippines.
