Mexico City has one of the cheapest public transport systems in the world.  Unfortunately for medical tourism travelers, the system also has a reputation for being one of the most crime-ridden.

Subway

Mexico City’s subway system offers medical tourism vacationers a convenient ride for some of the most reasonable fares anywhere in the world.  If you have to use the metro, however, make it during off hours.  Rush hour is not the ideal time to travel about in the world’s most populated city.  Incidents of molestation and pick-pocketing are far too common.  Off hours are generally between 10.30 am and noon.

On the upside, the subway is quick and efficient, with trains arriving every two minutes.  This means that if you find a train too crowded for you, simply wait a couple of minutes until the next one arrives.  Many of the stations feature works of prominent artists.  In addition, there are many comfortable places with refreshment stalls scattered around the venue.

Taxis

Taxies offer another convenient way of getting around Mexico, especially when the smog outside makes the thought of riding a crowded train or bus unattractive.  There are a few different rules to using taxis in Mexico City, however.  For one, never flag a taxi down in the middle of the street.  Only use turismo taxis that are assigned to city hotels.  Fares for sightseeing trips can be negotiated with the hotel concierge as the mediator.  To travel to and from the airport, most turismo taxis have a fixed fare.

Overall, these taxis are more expensive than the free range taxis on the street, but they are infinitely safer.  Radio dispatched sitio taxis can also be a safe option for getting around this medical tourism center in comfort.  The sedan taxis that are attached to five star hotels are the most expensive, but worth every cent you spend.  Never underestimate traffic crimes in Mexico City.
