Overview

As one of the most popular cuisines in the world, Mexican food needs no introduction. Most medical tourism travelers are likely to have sampled Mexican cuisine in their countries, and so, any major surprises are unlikely.

Local Cuisine

Mexican food generally revolves around two main staples – beans and corn. Beans, locally known as frijoles, can be mashed, stewed, or fried. Chicken and fish feature prominently on most restaurant menus, with the best bets for seafood dining located in the Yucatan Peninsula.

A tortilla is to a Mexican what a baguette is to French person. These are served at all meal times, and can be eaten alone or used to scoop up any number of sauces. Other national specialties include enchiladas and tacos that come with a variety of fillings, including vegetables, chicken, and cheese.

Mexico is also the place to try mole; a rich, thick sauce made of cocoa, nuts, and spices that usually accompanies meat dishes. There are different types of mole depending on the ingredients, with garlic and chilly being the base. For instance, green mole verde has fresh herbs as the main ingredient, while guacamole contains avocado with tomatoes and red peppers.

Beverages

A selection of Mexican beers has recently become very popular across the globe. The country produces several robust beers that are often stronger than the exports that land in your country. Mexican hot chocolate, a heavenly concoction of chocolate, sugar, and cream, garnished with cinnamon, is nothing like the hot chocolate available back home. In fact, several restaurants will serve up an extremely thick version of Mexican hot chocolate that doubles as a dessert.  Assuming your doctor gives you the okay, don't miss out on the local tequila, the strong spirit made from the agave plant. Also, take the time to sip some kahlua, the country’s distinctive coffee liqueur, on your medical tourism holiday.

International Dining

You shouldn't have too much trouble finding food that reminds you of home on your medical tourism holiday. Most major fast food chains and international eateries are located in the major tourist areas like Mexico City and the seaside resort towns. 5-star-hotels also have Continental and American restaurants that feature fine gourmet cuisine.
