Five Star Spas
Paying top dollar for the privilege of sweating in a claustrophobic room might seem silly to most of New Delhi’s residents. The city’s sweltering sweat-drenched summers do a great job of melting pounds off your frame, free of charge, they‘ll argue. While that may be true, many of the city’s five star hotels have gone ahead and added exclusive spa facilities to their list of amenities. The five-star spa culture, though relatively new in India, has been quick to entice residents to these lavish Turkish-marbled and glass-walled retreats, wafting with the fragrance of aromatic oils and the sounds of mood music. Business travelers are offered special Jet Lag massages while others can choose from exotic sounding packages that promise to balance your soul while plumping out your skin. Interiors are always impressive, and Eastern touches are everywhere from the sudden bursts of color to heavily beaded curtains.
Massages, Body Scrubs, and Wraps
After a day spent navigating the city’s dust-ridden streets, you’ll sorely be in need of a massage to soothe your frayed nerves, and the city’s spas offer a menu of body rubdowns that range from gentle lavender infused scrubs to positively masochistic bone-rattling massages. Medicated oils, smells-good-enough-to-eat fruit scrubs, herbal & spice pastes, and sandalwood & turmeric mixes that impart a glow are all liberally used. New Delhi, being a city descended from royal lineage, offers many lavish skin treatments derived from almonds, honey, milk cream, and other such nutrient-rich ingredients. Mineral salts from the Dead Sea and ingredients from Hawaii, Thailand, and Bali are also used in abundance. For a more Indian experience, stick to the Ayurvedic shirodhara (aromatic oil poured over your third eye), and free yoga and meditation classes.
