The seaside town of Kovalam, while lacking Goa’s energy, is nonetheless extremely popular with visitors who find the surprisingly liberal attitudes here a change from the conservative social mores of southern India.  Other popular destinations include Alleppey (known locally as Alappuzha), Thekkady (renowned for its Periyar Wildlife sanctuary, home to the Indian elephant and the bison), Cherai Beach, Chowra Beach, Kumarakom, Munnar Hills with its miles of fragrant tea and cardamom plantations, the historic city of Kochi (also known as Cochin) home to the oldest Jewish synagogue in the country, Wayanad, and the capital city of Trivandrum.  Kerala also boasts of many museums and palaces where tourists can catch a glimpse of the rich and vibrant cultural legacy of the state.
