Budget Accommodations

Cheap Hotels

New Delhi is always buzzing with tourists of the diplomatic, business, and holiday variety, and as such, hotel accommodations here tend to be on the expensive side.  There isn’t a great deal of choice in decent budget hotels or guesthouses.  The Pahraganj area is teeming with all kinds of accommodation options for the traveler watching his dollar.  Rates may be low, but you’ll share space with cockroaches, and in some rooms, you’ll wake up to the presence of monkeys on your window sill.  If this seems like too much exotica for your introductory visit to India, head to the Majnu ka Tilla, the local Tibetan settlement, where rooms are quieter, cleaner, and only slightly more expensive.

Mid Range Hotels

New Delhi’s moderate range hotels aren’t very innovative nor is there a varied choice in establishments.  For the most part, rooms are bland but comfortable, and they include air conditioning (a blessing if you’re visiting in summer), room service, and not much else.  Prices start from 20 dollars for a single bed, and many of these rooms are located in the busy commercial districts of Connaught Place and Paharganj.

Luxury Hotels

At the higher end of the scale, demand far outstrips supply.  You might have to book in advance or be prepared to shell out $400 for a mediocre room.  Although there is a choice of Indian and international hotel chains, just a few of them are really worth the hefty price tags.  Some of the classier hotels in this segment have smaller numbers of rooms – sometimes as few as 18 - but have great reputations for service. New Delhi is the second most common point of entry to India, and if this is your first Indian visit, a luxury hotel may offer an easier introduction to this country.
