Getting Around in New Delhi

Driving around Delhi can actually be a pleasant experience, but only during non-peak hours.  Rush hour traffic can be a nightmare – endless traffic jams comprising buses, all makes of cars, and the occasional stray cow or two in what is easily one of the most polluted cities in the world.  Small wonder then that New Delhi has the highest number of road accident rates in India

The city’s black and white taxis are the safest and most comfortable way to get around the city, besides being extremely easy to find.  Some taxis come equipped with meters, but when they don’t, negotiate the fare up front to avoid unpleasant haggling later.

Chauffeur-Driven Cars

Many hotels offer hired cars that range from local models to air conditioned limousines accompanied by a driver.  These will obviously cost more but are definitely worth the price when you factor in the time saved hailing cabs all day long. Car hire operators also will get you a taxicab fully outfitted with a meter. Driving yourself around New Delhi isn’t advised, even if you’re familiar with left hand driving; motorists here aren’t too keen on traffic rules.

Auto Rickshaws

In recent times, New Delhi’s auto rickshaws have turned eco friendly and now run on CNG (compressed natural gas).  They cost half as much as taxis do and although not too comfortable, offer a cheap way to get from A to B.  They are banned in many parts of New Delhi, but are easy to find in the Old Town where the Red Fort and the bustling bazaar of Chandni Chowk are located.  As with taxis, remember to haggle the fare before your journey.

Delhi Metro and Buses

The city now has its very own subway, but conditions can get quite cramped.  Lone female travelers might receive unwelcome attention.  The city’s bus system isn’t recommended either – pickpockets are common and drivers have a habit of sometimes cutting short their journey if they do not have enough passengers on board, leaving you either stranded or having to make a transfer to another bus.
