Overview
For many world travelers and medical tourism vacationers, Cuba still remains one of the last hidden tourist paradises in the world. The medical tourism industry has only recently begun to open its doors to foreign visitors, ending decades of isolation. A visit to one of the last bastions of Communism is a refreshing eye opener. Cubans have none of the dour outlook on life that plagues other Communist ruled people. The locals are fun loving, the culture is vibrant, and the attractions here are enhanced by large swaths of state-protected natural beauty.
Built by Jesuit missionaries in the eighteenth century, the San Cristobel Cathedral houses some of the country’s most revered religious works of art. The baroque façade of the church is fronted by a charming cobblestone plaza that is lined with little shops, museums, and cafes.
The Museo de la Ciudad houses the most renowned collection of art in the city, including hundreds of works from the Spanish colonial era.
The National Museum of Fine Arts is spread out across three floors and has an extensive selection of Cuban art displaying work from local, cutting-edge artists. Â The international wing houses mostly neo classical pieces from Europe, and a few Oriental and South American exhibits.
If you’re an Ernest Hemingway fan, head to the museum named after him in downtown Havana. There is a large collection of books and paintings, and even a typewriter used by the legendary writer.
For lessons in Cuban history, visit the Museum of the Revolution and the Granma Memorial.  Exhibits are dramatic and include everything from the remains of a shot down plane to a replica of the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. The Granma, the 59 foot motor launch which carried Castro and his band of insurgents to the island before the revolution, is displayed behind glass walls.Â
Outside Havana
One of the most popular tourist towns in Santiago de Cuba, Camaguey has a rich collection of little museums and galleries. The Pinar del Rio region’s most famous attractions are the Cuevo del Indio caves, complete with stalactite formations and underwater river systems.  For a look at Cuban cigar making on your medical tourism vacation, schedule a visit to one of the many cigar factories that are located in the town of Pinar del Rio.
