Nightlife in Sao Paulo

Overview

Stepping out in Sao Paulo is a more formal affair than in Rio. Paulistas like to dress up when they set off for dinner, and many establishments won’t allow you in if you’re in jeans and sneakers.  If in doubt, simply wear black.  The nightlife here begins very late in the evening, and if you end up at a club before midnight, expect very little thumping action going on. If there’s one thing you should remember before a night of partying, it’s to take a short nap in the afternoon.  This medical tourism destination might not have Rio's beaches, but it definitely knows a thing or two about partying.

Sao Paulo’s party scene tends to be spread out across a few clusters that include bars, cafés, restaurants, and clubs. To avoid getting stuck in one of the city’s infamous traffic jams, pick a neighborhood and zero in on your choice of bar for refreshment, a restaurant for a leisurely dinner, and a club where you’ll spend the rest of the evening. It makes no sense to make reservations in three different places across town. 

Neighborhoods

Vila Olympia is where the city’s young and restless converge. There’s a great selection of bars here and some terrific clubs.  The action is hectic enough for bars and clubs to be packed even on weeknights.  Vila Maladena caters to an older crowd and is short on dance clubs.  However, it has plenty of bars and lounges for the 30 and 40-something crowd. For live music, head to Vila Maladena or Pinheiros.  

Bars and Clubs

Many bars will insist on a minimum number of drinks.  Upon entering, you will be given a slip of paper, and on leaving, all your expenses will be tallied up.  If you lose the slip of paper, expect to pay a huge maximum fee – the bar will assume you’ve had the most number of drinks possible. 

The kind of music blaring out at the city’s dance clubs extends all the way from hip hop to electronic and Brazilian music.  Sao Paulo has a thriving music scene with no shortage of concerts and live music events.   

There’s also a vibrant theater scene – make time in your medical tourism schedule to catch a classical music concert or opera.
