Variety of Accommodation Options
Staying in Sao Paulo is a different experience from staying in Rio. The city isn’t exactly made for tourists, and during your travels, rarely will you see vacationers in jungle print tees and shorts. Expect to be surrounded by an endless sea of Paulistas going about their way. It’s that way with the restaurants and the clubs that you visit on your medical tourism vacation, and it’s the exact same way at the hotels you stay. As the country’s commercial capital, the city plays host to business travelers, and movers and shakers from around Brazil. As such, the accommodations here are more geared to affluent business travelers. Â
Since this is a business city, you’ll find that hotels are packed from Monday to Friday, and then empty on Saturday and Sunday. The period from December to February brings with it relative calm as Paulistas pack up their bags and head to the beaches for the summer.Â
Budget Hotels
Most budget hotels can be found on Rua Santa Efigenia and Rua dos Andradas. These areas, however, are magnets for prostitution and crime, so be sure to travel in groups whenever possible. Fortunately, supply far outstrips demand in Sao Paulo's hotel industry, so finding safe, comfortable, and affordable rooms is relatively easy (assuming you book well in advance). With enough planning, you can bypass budget hotels altogether and say in slightly upscale establishments at relatively moderate rates. Â
You’ll find moderately priced rooms at the Avenida Paulista, the nerve center of the city. Centrally located, rooms in this area serve as useful launching points during your medical tourism stay. The area is served by the metro, and hotels here cater to business executives. Rates drop by 50 percent over the weekend when business declines. The Centro area gives you access to all that’s happening downtown, but turns into a ghost town of sorts by evening because there are hardly any clubs or restaurants that are worth visiting.Â
Luxury Hotels
Jardins is an exclusive neighborhood that’s well planned and lined with trees, boutiques, hotels, and restaurants. Most of the finer hotels, including the bigger international names, are located here. You’ll be close to all the best nightlife spots in town and the very finest in shopping.Â
