Jump the Border to Mexico

They say if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.  For many Americans, being asked to “press 3 for English” is a subject of much consternation.  Many are questioning how the situation would unfold if the tables were turned with more Americans turning up in Mexico.  That situation isn’t quite so farfetched, though.  With rising costs of healthcare pushing consumers abroad for everything from dental tourism to major surgery, Latin America has become a key player in the medical tourism industry.  Mexico is a huge favorite among Americans who don’t want to travel that far from home just to cover the cost of small, simple procedures, such as fixing Invisalign braces.  TIME magazine reports,

In recent years, companies all over the U.S. have sprung up to guide Americans through the insurance and logistical hurdles of surgery abroad, including many in U.S. border states affiliated with medical facilities in Mexico.  The physician-managed MedToGo in Tempe, Arizona, founded in 2000, says its clients save ‘up to 75% on medical care’ by getting it in Mexico.

With savings like this, dental tourism and other medical tourism consumers can focus their attention on the most important factor of selecting the right provider: quality of care.

Quality of Care on a Medical Vacation

Although it may sound too good to be true to have both low-cost treatments and high-quality care, medical tourists appear to have struck gold often enough for the rest of the world to sit up and take notice.  Insurance companies are now evaluating the need to provide coverage for procedures performed during medical vacations.  Reputable certification agencies are evaluating hospitals and clinics in countries around the world for quality of care.  The worldwide Web is an unlimited source of information providing details on the procedures, the reputation of the providers, and recommendations from other consumers.  Today, the average consumer need only spend a few hours online to find data on everything from the cost of Invisalign braces to the qualifications of recommended dentists.  Thanks to medical tourism, consumers are finally feeling empowered about their health and health care options.
