To Go or Not To Go on a Medical Vacation to India

Medical Tourism India

The uninsured, desperate, and adventurous of the world are helping to drive a new sub-section of the large health care industry.  Medical tourism to countries like India is becoming a global phenomenon that is receiving praise and criticism alike.  Detractors claim that a medical vacation abroad can expose a patient to certain unnecessary risks.  This is especially true in developing countries where hygiene and safety are major concerns.  Supporters of medical tourism to countries like India argue that many healthcare centers in developing countries are world class, extremely safe, and offer an unbelievable range of health care options that you can’t find in the West.  Lawmakers, politicians, insurance companies, and healthcare providers will likely wrestle with medical tourism for many years yet.  In the mean time however, patients will probably continue to take medical vacations abroad as they seek affordable, accessible, and enjoyable treatment options.  In other words, medical tourism to countries like India, Thailand, and Singapore will likely continue unless the West can develop better ways of providing health care to its patients.

Best Hospitals in India for Heart Care

Many hospitals in India are teeming with doctors and surgeons who have not only studied in top Western medical schools, but who have also helped pioneer breakthrough technologies, many of which are not available in the US or UK.  Dr. Naresh Trehan, founder of Escorts Heart Institute and Research Center, New Delhi, is an authority in robotic cardiac surgery and has worked under Dr. Frank Spencer at New York University, School of Medicine. Dr Pratap C Reddy, the founder of the Apollo Hospitals (some of the best hospitals in India for heart care), received his training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and has 200 doctors on his staff who are qualified to work in the United States.  Wockhardt Hospitals, Max Healthcare’s Devki Devi Heart, the Vascular Institute, Care Hospitals, and Jaslok Hospitals also have equally impressive records and certifications.

It’s difficult to say how the medical tourism debate will ultimately play out, but with credentials like these, naysayers will have a difficult time convincing patients to ignore the many benefits of treatment abroad when their own health care systems are inadequate, overpriced, or inaccessible.
