What Is Dental Tourism?
Dental tourism, which is a segment of medical tourism, involves travelling abroad for affordable dental care (dental implants, dental veneers, or dental crowns), especially when such procedures are too expensive in the patient’s own country. Growing in popularity, dental tourism is bringing an influx of foreign patients to countries such as the Philippines, South Africa, Costa Rica, Singapore, and Brazil, providing these medical travellers with the opportunity to enjoy a vacation while undergoing the treatment abroad and saving in the process. According to the Economist, nearly 750,000 Americans travelled abroad in 2007, and this number is expected to rise to 6 million by 2010 and 10 million by 2012. Â
Medical Vacations Are Set to Rise in the Philippines
As a recent entrant onto the medical tourism stage, the Filipino government is optimistic about its future despite stiff competition from long running medical tourist markets in Thailand and Singapore. In a recent ABS CBN news article, Ms. Carrion, Undersecretary of the Department of Tourism, stated that "in 2008, the number of foreign patients who sought medical services in the Philippines significantly rose to about 100,000 from 60,000 in 2007."
Furthermore by 2012, the Philippines could generate $3 billion and receive at least 200,000 foreign patients annually, making the Pearl of the Orient the next best tourist destination for medical vacations. One such place to visit in the Philippines is the Sacred Heart Dental Clinic in Manila, which provides their patients with a state of the art clinic providing more natural looking and functional alternative dental implants than the more traditional bridges or dentures.
Cost of Dental Implants in the Philippines
According to CNN, 86.7 million Americans under the age of 65 didn’t have health insurance during 2007 and 2008. Even though President Barack Obama has stated that reforming health care is one of his top priorities, that may not come soon enough for many patients looking for affordable dental implants here and now. This is why medical and dental tourism's future looks so promising.
The cost of dental implants varies based on the location, patient, and facility. However in the Philippines it costs roughly $925 to have between 1 to 5 conventional implants, while 6 or more only costs $822. Along with a regular or restorative crown, the total price is $1200 to $1400, providing foreign patients with dental implants at an affordable price.
