“Seeing is believing,” some say.  When patients visiting Thailand for LASIK surgery look at their bills without corrective lenses, the believing becomes reality.  With Thailand’s low cost of LASIK surgery, medical tourists can literally see affordable healthcare opportunities.  LASIK is just one of many medical procedures that Thailand offers at heavily discounted prices.  Others services include minor procedures like dental fillings or major procedures like heart surgery.  Typical savings vary depending on the procedure and location, but don't be surprised if your bill is 60% to 80% of what you'd pay back home.

Medical Tourism Filling Thai Hospitals

Medical tourism has proven to be such a booming industry that even residents of destination countries are travelling to other destination countries for procedures at even lower prices.  It seems everyone, not just Western patients, is looking to save on his or her health care.  Health travelers aren’t just looking for medical bargains though.  Some seek better and more accurate care and treatment.  A United Arab Emirates man visited several hospitals seeking diagnosis and treatment for a common kidney problem.  After multiple unsuccessful diagnoses in his own country, he learned about affordable and healthcare in Thailand from a fellow villager.  Still, others travel to avoid the crowded hospitals as they fill with still more medical tourists.  For example, recently, Singaporeans have been travelling to Thailand for even greater reductions in the already low costs for procedures like dental work or LASIK surgery…all of this despite the fact that Singapore is a respectable medical tourism destination in its own right.

Will Affordable Healthcare Catch On in the West?

Despite the growth of medical tourism and an apparent health care crisis in the United States, the domestic medical industry hasn’t been as quick as other industries to consider outsourcing and embracing globalization.  Understandably, assembling an automobile is quite different from reassembling a human being after surgery, but the US healthcare industry cannot afford to ignore its struggling health care infrastructure.  Maybe medical tourism will dissipate over time.  As the trend fuels the economies in destination countries like Thailand, India, Brazil, and Hungary, maybe the margins created by current discounts will shrink.  Hopefully, the US will find a way to tap into this ever-growing market of affordable healthcare and leverage it for those who can’t afford to travel abroad to take advantage of the savings.
