Terrorist Attacks in India Should Heighten Medical Tourists’ Awareness

Recent attacks in Mumbai, India brought solemn reminders of the potential dangers of international travel, including for medical tourism.  Political unrest within and between other countries can have collateral effects on tourists.  The cost of not taking precautions could put you in the wrong place at the wrong time for your tummy tuck surgery.  This isn’t meant to be a scare tactic or deterrent for medical tourism travelers.  Rather, this should encourage you to pay attention.  Enjoy yourself, but take care of yourself and those travelling with you.

1. American tourists generally stand out in most countries.  Sometimes it’s our habits; other times it’s the way we dress.  One key to safety is to downplay your tourist status and avoid standing out as a target for attention.

1. Get a clue early on.  The less you have to rely on others (like asking for directions or translations), the less likely you are to be tricked or mislead.

1. It’s not us against them.  The same practices that help keep you safe in the US can help you in India: 
   • Pay attention to your surroundings.
   • Know where you are and where you’re going.
   • Use a buddy system - Travel in pairs or groups.
   • Don’t advertise your money.
