Plastic Surgery Not Just for Breasts
When most people think about plastic surgery, they usually picture common procedures like breast augmentation, tummy tucks, or face lifts. Most don’t realize that some types of dental care can also be considered plastic, or cosmetic, surgery. Dental crowns are one example. They enhance the appearance of people’s smiles by removing gaps created by pulled or lost teeth. The right set of crowns can transform a smile from toothless to tempting in just a few…
Dental Tourism Packages on the Rise in Economic Straits
Now more than ever, Americans are looking to other countries for answers. Foreign car makers and technology have long held the favor of American consumers. With the advent of globalization, businesses, too, were lured abroad. These days, growing numbers of US patients are leaving the borders for countries like India, Thailand, Hungary, and Argentina, for other reasons like medical vacations and dental tourism packages. People are tired of unaffordable health care and the lack of adequate insurance coverage for even basic dental care like fillings, bonding, or caps.  Â
Medical Vacations Expand Access to Care, but Is It Enough?
When choosing between paying the mortgage and paying for dental care, tourism packages may seem a bit steep. Most people can’t afford the outright costs of a $50,000 knee surgery and some might have trouble paying an of average $300 to $600 for dental bonding without advanced notice. For this group of people, dental tourism and medical vacation packages, although just a portion of what they'd pay back home, may still be out of reach for the majority of Americans.Â
Hungary Helps Curb Healthcare Appetites
One New York man was concerned about being alone and so far from home during his dental tourism package that he brought his family—wife and two children—with him. While in Hungary, he had multiple tooth extractions and implants installed. The outpatient procedure was quick which gave him and his family time to explore surrounding cities like Budapest, Vienna, and even Prague. Possibly the best part of this man’s story is that he still paid just a fraction of the cost (including airfare and lodging for four) of what the same procedure would have cost in the States.
Unfortunately, there are millions of other cases where patients could not have the dental work they needed, because they couldn’t afford it or the airfare involved. Medical tourism has many success stories, but until it reaches everyone, it won't be a global phenomenon.
