Thailand has garnered a reputation as a medical tourism destination of repute.  This is especially true in elective surgeries like male to female surgery, the cost of which is very high in Western countries.  Compared to other countries, the cost of male to female surgery is approximately $20,000 cheaper in Thailand.  Also known as sex reassignment surgery, male to female surgery involves a number of complex procedures to bring about a sexual transition.  These can include hair removal, reshaping the testicles and penis to function and look like a vagina, and breast implants.

Risks and Disadvantages of Medical Tourism

Though medical tourism is on the rise across the world, it does have certain risks.  An elective surgery like sex reassignment is performed over several months interspersed with long periods for healing.  Going back to a foreign country repeatedly means recurrent travel, hotel, hospital, and other associated costs.  Cases of scams and malpractice occur occasionally, and one has to take certain precautions to avoid falling prey to this.  While opting for medical tourism in countries like Thailand, patients should look at many hospitals , check the credentials of doctors, ask about accreditation, research patient testimonials, and plan an itinerary well in advance. 

Cost of Male to Female Surgery Not a Deterrent When in Thailand

Essentially elective surgery, sex reassignment can cost quite a packet.  But medical tourism destinations like Thailand offer this and other surgeries at prices that are far lower than those in the Western world.  But a number of prerequisites must be met before a patient can opt for a sex change operation.  These include certification from a psychologist, sustained hormonal treatment, and an age requirement (18 years).  In addition, one must be diagnosed with either gender dysphoria, gender identity disorder, or associated conditions.  Patients should also have lived full-time in a cross gender role for a minimum of one year with supporting documents.  Once these conditions are met the patient might be able to proceed with sex reassignment surgery.  So plan well, be sure, and get ready to become a new person.
