  • Plastic Surgery Not Just for Breasts

When most people think about plastic surgery, they usually picture common procedures like breast augmentation, tummy tucks, or face lifts.  Most don’t realize that some types of dental care can also be considered plastic, or cosmetic, surgery.  Dental crowns are one example.  They enhance the appearance of people’s smiles by removing gaps created by pulled or lost teeth.  The right set of crowns can transform a smile from toothless to tempting in just a few…

Medical Tourism Benefits Cataract Patients

Combining the cost of health care with the precision required for eye surgery, you can understand why patients typically don’t have cataract surgery unless they’re suffering loss of vision that affects work or other daily activities.  It's an important procedure, but few can afford the unbelievable prices associated with the operation.  Imagine having to choose between your eyes and your mortgage.

Turning Blind Eyes to Health Care Insurance Costs

Let’s face it, eye surgery shouldn’t cost an arm or a leg, nor should your health care insurance coverage for that matter.  To cope with economic hardships, some patients opt for higher deductibles that reduce their monthly payments.  It eases their check-to-check burdens.  But when it comes time for a medical procedure, the bill is nothing to blink at.  Other countries, like Malaysia take alleviating the high costs of health care by offering free cataract surgery to the poor during World Sight Day.  Malaysia’s normal cost for cataract surgery is almost $1,500, as opposed to the United States’ average of $3,000 per patient.

But Now I See, in Malaysia

Imagine experiencing your new, unclouded vision on a lush beach with warm weather.  The reality of it is, as a cataract surgery patient, you could care less about the setting.  You could be looking around the graffiti-filled, litter-strewn inner cities in which many US hospitals are located and still be ecstatic, because you can see again.  Still, it wouldn’t hurt to top off your renewed vision with the former locale at a vastly discounted price.  After the surgery, you’re able to perform most normal activities.  Doctors recommend limiting or avoiding strenuous activity, but you’ll be laying out on the beach or taking in Malaysia’s sights, sounds, and culture; nothing strenuous about that.  It’s a good idea to stay out of the pool though.
