Medical Tourism Opens Cosmetic Surgery to the Little People
The “little people” want to be beautiful, too. Thanks in part to medical tourism, plastic or cosmetic surgery is no longer exclusive to rich, celebrity types. Since the popularization of cosmetic procedures on shows like “Nip Tuck” and “Extreme Make Over,” more middle class patients have joined the ranks of the fabulous-looking despite the cost of a face lift or chin surgery. The rise of medical tourism has also broadened access to health care in general, particularly favoring cosmetic surgery. The phenomenon has made beautiful much more affordable.
Cheap Cosmetic Surgery Maintains Expensive Quality
Dr. Stanley Khainga, a Kenyan surgeon who treats numerous medical tourists says, "We even get clients from UK, tourists from other European countries and people from other African countries who come to Kenya, because the procedures are not only cheap but of high standard." The standards of which Dr. Khainga speaks are a sort of global regulation in the form of accreditation many medical tourism facilities must acquire. The Joint Commission International, or JCI, issues the accreditation to hospitals and healthcare facilities based on certain criteria, certifying that the site and its staff are internationally acceptable. Health travellers can find solace in knowing that selecting the right facility should result in high quality despite the low cost of their chin, back, or heart surgery.
Cosmetic Surgery: Better to Take
You often hear the cliché, “It’s better to give than to receive.” I believe that to be true in most cases. However, when it comes to cosmetic surgery, sometimes it’s better to take, at least in terms of surgeons taking unwanted fat from the abdomen, butt, thighs, or chin; or, in terms of patients taking hundreds, even thousands of dollars off the cost of their chin surgery while taking advantage of a medical tourism package. It’s still hard to believe sometimes that such a deal exists where you wake up with a new face and enjoy warm weather, sandy beaches, and cozy hotel accommodations all wrapped up in a savings blanket of 20 to 60 percent on average.
