Brazil with its fabulously low plastic surgery prices has been a favorite haunt of foreigners, especially Americans, who throng to this medical tourism hub to combine cosmetic surgery with a spot of sunshine.  The country already boasts of some trademark procedures offered at low costs, including the Brazilian Butt Lift, that promise physiques to rival the best of what Rio’s beaches have to offer.   

Other assorted body parts that can be lifted, toned, and otherwise tightened range from the breasts to the thighs, and everything else in between.  Literally.  This tropical paradise now offers vaginal rejuvenation procedures, a surprisingly common and controversial procedure that aims to boost a woman’s sex life, or so advocates claim. 

A Controversial Medical Tourism Offering

Vaginal rejuvenation is one of the most controversial plastic surgery procedures to have emerged in recent years.  To many people, especially women’s right advocates, promotion of the procedure enforces stereotypes and adds to the already overwhelming pressure women feel to have the perfect body.   

It’s, many say, completely unnecessary and does not appear to have noticeable effects in a woman’s appearance or her sex life.  In fact, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is all set to issue a warning against having the procedure, saying the dangers far outweigh any supposed benefits.  However, according to Estetica Brasil, a company that offers the low cost vaginal rejuvenation packages, the procedure can enhance sexual function, and will “address urinary incontinence.”   

Another lesser known function of vaginal rejuvenation is the restoration of the hymen, which creates the illusion of virginity. Women in cultures that place a high price on virginity have traditionally been known to opt for such surgeries to fake virginity, and thereby escape spousal wrath. While some of the promotions surrounding vaginal rejuvenation make cringe-worthy promises of a “harmonious and pleasant” looking vagina, it seems to be working wonders for those who do opt to undergo this procedure.
