Cost of Malaysian Root Canal Almost Too Good to Be True

With savings of 20 to 70 percent or more, Malaysia and other dental tourism destination countries like India, Thailand, Mexico, and Singapore seem almost too good to be true.  Fortunately, the low costs of living and labor in these countries explain why a root canal can be so cheap in price, but so rich in quality.  These savings help hospitals procure the most advanced technology and first class personnel while charging just pennies on the dollar for even the most complicated medical procedures when compared to the United States.

Dental Tourism Patients Look to Insurers for Help

In times of health care and economic crises combined, Americans count themselves fortunate if they aren’t among the 47 million people who are uninsured and 30 million more whose insurance coverage is inadequate.  Still, high premiums and even higher deductibles have dental tourism patients looking to insurers for help with health care woes.  Some insurance providers have been buying into the medical and dental tourism trend by helping patients fund their medical vacations.  Providers realize that funding low cost root canals or teeth whitening may be in their best interest.  In some cases, medical vacations help insurers kill two birds with one stone:  1.) Discounted pricing serves as an incentive for patients to seek treatment earlier (making it more preventative care) and  2.) The lower prices make for lower payouts from the insurer, potentially increasing their margins.

Malaysia Provides Safety in Numbers

The growing flood of medical and dental tourists has helped increase the number of accredited hospitals overseas.  In fact, the number of Joint Commission International  accredited facilities has jumped from 76 to 220 since 2005.  Currently, the JCI leads the charge on which hospitals are deemed reputable based on US standards.  The accreditation helps assure health insurance companies they won’t face excessive payouts (or a lost client) due to a botched surgery.  The comfort factor for patients, insurers, and dental tourism companies has helped the industry grow exponentially to its $40 billion status in worldwide revenues.
